Emergency Garage Door Repair Near Route 7 and the Toll Road

Door stuck open, stuck shut or hanging crooked? Our phone line is open 24/7.

A garage door that will not close leaves the house open, and one that will not open can trap a car. Sweetbay of Wolf Trap takes calls for both, and our phone line is open 24/7. This page makes no promise about arrival time, so ask about timing when you phone.

Before You Pull the Red Cord

The red cord hanging from the opener trolley disconnects the door from the opener. Federal rule 16 CFR 1211.16 requires opener instructions to say it should be used only when the door is closed, if possible, because weak or broken springs may let an open door fall rapidly, causing injury or death (eCFR).

Chamberlain’s manual-operation guide adds a short list. Never pull the handle to raise or lower the door. Make sure the doorway is clear of people, pets and objects. Keep hands and feet away from sections and hinges. Stop at once if the door feels unusually heavy, will not stay open or slams shut.

When Not to Lift the Door by Hand

Chamberlain says not to move the door manually in any of these cases, because each points to a mechanical fault that needs a professional:

  • The door feels extremely heavy.
  • The door falls quickly when released.
  • The door will not stay open.
  • A spring, cable or roller looks broken or damaged.

Leave the door where it is, keep people clear, and call.

Locked Out of Your Own Garage

Some doors carry an exterior release kit. Chamberlain describes it as a small round keyed lock on the outside of the door, usually near the top panel. Turning the key and pulling the lock disconnects the opener so the door can be lifted by hand. It does not lift the door for you.

Chamberlain also notes that a garage with no exterior release and no other way in cannot be opened manually from outside during a power outage. If that is your situation, call and say so.

Starting From Leesburg Pike

Our office is at 8500 Leesburg Pike, Suite 206, in Vienna. Route 7 runs along the northern edge of Wolf Trap, and the Dulles Toll Road crosses its center, with access from exits 15 and 16 (Wikipedia). Measured in a straight line from the office, Wolf Trap is about 2.1 miles west, Idylwood about 3.1 miles southeast and Merrifield about 3.7 miles south.

Those are map distances, not drive times. Read the area pages for Wolf Trap, Merrifield and Idylwood if you want to see how doors differ between them.

What to Have Ready When You Call

  1. Whether the door is open, shut or partway.
  2. Whether anyone pulled the red cord.
  3. Whether a spring shows a gap, or a cable hangs loose.
  4. Whether a car, a person or a pet is on the wrong side of the door.
  5. The brand on the opener, if you can read it from the floor.

If the situation is stable and you would rather write, use the form on the contact page; it takes a photo of the door.

Emergency Questions, Answered

Is it safe to pull the red cord hanging from the opener?
Only in the right conditions. Federal rule 16 CFR 1211.16 tells owners to use the emergency release only when the door is closed, if possible, because weak or broken springs may let an open door fall rapidly (eCFR text). Chamberlain also says never to pull the handle to raise or lower the door.
The power is out and the car is inside. What can I try?
If the door is fully closed, the doorway is clear and no spring, cable or roller looks damaged, Chamberlain describes pulling the red cord and lifting the door by hand (Chamberlain guide). If it feels extremely heavy or will not stay up, stop and call us.
Part of my door hangs lower than the other. Can I still close it?
Leave it where it is. A crooked door often means a cable has slipped or a roller has left its track, and Chamberlain lists damaged cables or rollers as a reason not to move the door by hand. Do not run the opener; phone us and describe which side sits low.
Is the phone line really open in the middle of the night?
Yes. Our phone line is open 24/7, every day of the week. This page makes no promise about arrival time, so ask about timing when you call.
Does an emergency call cost extra?
This page lists no separate price for an emergency visit, so we will not guess at one here. Starting prices for spring, cable, roller and track work are on the pricing page, and the exact price is confirmed at your garage before work begins.

Every starting price we publish is on the pricing page. For a problem that is not urgent, see garage door repair.
