Garage Door Spring Repair Near Wolf Trap, Merrifield and Idylwood
From $150 per spring, sized to your door’s weight. Our phone line is open 24/7.
A broken garage door spring means the door can no longer be lifted safely, by hand or by the opener. Sweetbay of Wolf Trap replaces torsion and extension springs from $150 per spring. A technician tests the balance, fits springs sized to the door, and checks the reverse before leaving. Our phone line is open 24/7.

Five Signs a Spring Has Given Out
- A loud bang in the garage, then a door that will not rise.
- The opener hums or strains and the door moves only a few inches.
- A gap in the coil above the door, or a stretched spring hanging beside the track.
- The door shudders, sits crooked or drifts as it travels. DASMA says a door that does not run smoothly may be an unsafe condition.
- One side of the door lifts before the other.
A squeak by itself is not a failure. DASMA says springs can squeak in normal use and suggests a spray-on lubricant made for garage doors before you call anyone.
What the Technician Checks, in Order
- The spring type. A torsion spring is a coil on a shaft above the door. Extension springs run alongside the tracks and need a safety cable.
- The door’s weight. A spring must match the door it lifts. The DASMA data sheet says a mismatch can shorten the life of the door and the opener and can make hand operation unsafe.
- The parts the spring works through. Cables, drums and bottom brackets carry the same load. Worn cables are a repair of their own; see cable repair.
- The winding. The turns follow the door maker’s instructions. Too few leaves the door drifting down; too many strains other parts.
- Balance and reverse. The door should stay put when stopped halfway, and a closing door should reverse when it meets an obstacle.

Each figure is a starting point. A door with one spring and a door with two are quoted differently, and weight and size decide the final amount. You hear the exact price at the garage first.
Wolf Trap Doors and the Cycle Count
Springs are rated in cycles, and one cycle is one open plus one close. Amarr says residential springs are 10,000-cycle springs. Our arithmetic: a door used 2 times a day reaches 10,000 cycles in about 13.7 years, while a door used 10 times a day gets there in under 3 years.
Wolf Trap is a good place to run the numbers. Census QuickFacts lists 96.3% of homes as owner-occupied, with 3.00 people per household. As an example only, a household of three that uses the door 6 times a day adds 2,190 cycles a year, so 10,000 cycles last about 4.6 years. Your count will differ.
DASMA’s spring cycle life sheet adds that rust, added door weight, rough handling and missing lubrication all change the result. See garage door repair in Wolf Trap for the neighborhood, or check Merrifield and Idylwood if you are farther south.
When a Spring Is Only Part of the Problem
A snapped spring often leaves wear behind it. If the door also scrapes or jumps, read about track repair. If the opener still strains after the spring is fixed, opener repair is the next page to read. Every price we publish is on the pricing page, and the contact page shows how to reach us.
