Idylwood Garage Door Repair for Doors Worth Keeping
North and south of I-66 · Older lifting parts, openers and complete doors

With an older door, the real question is which parts have worn out and which still have life in them. Sweetbay of Wolf Trap tests the lifting system first, because a tired spring or cable can make a sound door look finished.
What the Idylwood Numbers Say About Your Door
The median home in Idylwood was built in 1975, according to ACS 2020–2024 data compiled by MMCG Analytics. The Census Bureau lists 54.5% of homes as owner-occupied and a median value of $708,400 for 2019–2023 (Census QuickFacts for Idylwood).
A house that age can have a door of any age, because doors, springs and openers get swapped one at a time and the receipts rarely stay with the house. So we begin with the parts, not the date on the deed.
Why Age Changes the Inspection
DASMA, the garage door industry association, says an older door should have its springs inspected by a professional technician and replaced if needed. It also tells owners to look over the cables that run to the bottom brackets, because frayed or worn cables can break (DASMA safety tips).
- Springs. We test balance by hand and look for coil gaps or rust. Spring repair starts at $150 per spring.
- Cables and brackets. Fraying shows up near the bottom bracket first. Cable repair starts at $150 per cable.
- Rollers and track. Worn rollers rattle, and a bent track grabs them. Track work starts at $150 per door.
- Sections. If one panel is damaged, we check whether a matching one exists for that model and color. Panel replacement is quoted on site, and a new door is the fallback.
North of I-66, South of I-66
Wikipedia says the Beltway in the 1960s, then I-66 and the Orange Line in the 1980s, brought apartment, townhouse and small-lot housing complexes to the north side of Idylwood, along with the Idylwood Towers condominium. The south side remains mostly large-lot single-family housing.
For a garage door, that means openings of different widths and different hardware from one street to the next. Tell us whether yours is a single bay or a wide double door, and we will bring parts that fit.
An Old Opener Needs a Safety Check, Not a Guess
A motor that still lifts the door is not proof that it reverses safely. A 1990 CPSC notice says some openers made before 1982 only stop a closing door instead of reversing it, and that the older reversing devices cannot be adjusted or repaired to match openers made in 1982 or later.
The age of a house tells you nothing about the unit in it. The label does. If yours predates 1982, or you cannot tell, ask us about opener repair or a new opener after we have checked the door it lifts.
Finding Idylwood From Our Office
Idylwood is about 3.1 miles southeast of our Leesburg Pike office, in a straight line. Route 7 is its northern border, the Capital Beltway its western border and Lee Highway (U.S. 29) its southern border, according to the Idylwood entry. Idylwood Park lies north of I-66 and east of the Beltway, and George C. Marshall High School is in the community.
The 2020 census counted 17,954 residents. If your address sits nearer Tysons or Dunn Loring, give us the street and we will tell you plainly whether we cover it.
